I hope that the list of things I admire and appreciate about Morgantown rightly high-light all that is good about this place. But the longer I live here, there are parts of this town that deeply unsettle me, especially as a woman who lives alone.

I don’t share this story to discourage people from applying; the purpose of this post is to do the exact opposite!

However, I do think there is something palpably sinister about this town. It is across from a terrific bakery, near a local brewery’s tap room, and is a 10 minute walk to campus. When I first moved here, I felt safe here, even as I heard the old house creak and settle. Sometimes when he’s drunk, he calls for an ambulance. I know that in sharing this, I may be perpetuating stereotypes about West Virginia–and that concerns me.

When he does this, I watch from my bay window, shaking my head. But then, last week, I watched from my bedroom window as a different neighbor straddled a young woman and punched her in the face. But I want to be honest about what has been the biggest struggle about coming to the program.

Sarah: Poetry gave me a close attention to language and construction that has made me a more thoughtful and (sometimes) precise writer, more considered in what I’m doing and why.

Sometimes we looked at a poem and asked why it had to be a poem (sometimes it did and sometimes it didn’t), and I think the same question can be asked of various types of projects in publishing, especially when it comes to open access or augmenting a book project with an online component—what form suits the material best? What I worried about most when I first committed to WVU was actually just about living in Morgantown. If there’s anything that I regret about coming here, it’s that I feel some degree of discomfort and unhappiness in living in this town. One of the first things my GTA orientation mentor told me was to invest in pepper spray.Precisely because I’m using the skills we honed in hours of workshop.Sarah: That’s exactly how I sold myself for this job!He is currently working on a number of projects exploring the effects of computational processes on writing and rhetoric as they relate to wearable devices and digital culture.Sarah Munroe and Kat Saunders worked as graduate assistants at West Virginia University Press while earning MFA degrees in creative writing from the WVU English department, and both have gone on in publishing—Sarah at Temple University Press, where she is an acquisitions editor, and Kat at Kent State University Press, where she is an assistant editor. Although I don’t miss the dead mice in the walls—only downside to that old farmhouse. Sarah: I got to copyedit Marc Harshman’s poetry collection and work on the Sarah: That book is so pretty! I’m so glad they put that out and so sad I missed being a part of it—but I’m glad you got to work with it.And if you’re applying this season, I think it should be on your radar too. Here’s why: One reason WVU might not be on your list right now is because you’re just not sure if you could handle living in West Virginia. And I don’t exactly have an antidote to that concern. In this conversation, conducted over Google Chat, they talk about how their time at West Virginia University informs their publishing work. I did developmental editing on the introduction to the beer book, and I think that’s where I saw some of the MFA workshopping skills come directly into play.Sarah: I don’t know about you, but I miss West Virginia University Press. Also, some of the same skills that I used in teaching English 101—asking the same basic questions of the intro that I told my students to ask about their writing about order of information: what’s necessary and important and interesting, and why? I’m actually doing a freelance developmental edit, and it is definitely where I feel most comfortable as an editor.
