The Master of Science Degree in Industrial Design is a two-year curriculum committed to design innovation, research, and commercialization.

Our studio courses develop the student's mastery of industrial design skill sets for accurate communication of visual ideas.

At their Midpoint Review, prior to the final year of study, students will propose a project for their thesis to a review committee.

Sample Degree Plan: MS in Industrial Design (Design Research and Development) Student-Driven Activities Design Dialogue Design Dialogue is an annual forum organized by Industrial Design graduate students that seeks to expand the spectrum of design issues, disseminate ideas, and strengthen connections within the design community.

Through a series of lectures, workshops, and discussions, Design Dialogue aims to share knowledge, generate a new understanding of design issues, and engage the creative community in meaningful dialogue. The School of Industrial Design is ideal for prospective students who are interested in a career in the design of cars, toys, modern furniture, or commercial products. Our students are trained by professional industrial designers who have shaped some of today's hottest products. For the last three years, the following speakers have been invited: 2016 Nov.16 “Design for a Healthy Future” Dr. Richardson, Global Medial Innovation program at Rice University Debora Mansfield, Director at Houston Technology Center Steve Stelzer, program director at Green Building Resource Center 2015 Dec. 10 “User Error: a conversation about human-centered design” Jim Breaux, futurist Jim Duke, senior designer at IGLOO Joseph Burling, UH Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience program Recent Student Publications and Exhibitions Elizabeth Reuter (MS, 2016) “Understanding emergency workers’ behavior and perspectives on design and safety in the workplace” Applied Ergonomics 59 (2017) 73-83.Lauren Baker (MS, 2016) “Hermedic: A graphic language designed to improve patient understanding by leveraging multi-model learning” 2016 ID RED Exhibition, University of Houston Amy Conley, Ashley Lincoln, Mark Williams (MS, 2017) “Duo: A furniture system designed for a mobile, solar-powered electronic shipping container classroom” 2016 ID RED Exhibition, University of Houston International Study Abroad Program Lauren Baker (MS, 2016) and Mark Williams (MS, 2017) participated in the “the Northeast Asia Inspiration: History, Culture, and Design” program and studied design inspirations in Seoul and Beijing for 33 days in 2015.Graduate studies courses hone the graduate student's mastery of industrial design research, materials and processes, developmental drawing, 3D model-making, and construction practices.Graduate students will work on independent and group projects under technical and creative guidance of our prestigious faculty of professional industrial designers. The MA program provides professional study within focused fields of physical design. In addition to classroom and collaborative coursework, each student develops a professional portfolio that will be used to launch a career in Industrial Design. Our program exposes students and instructors to the design and business community by participating in and organizing events and workshops, and it provides students with the skills and techniques that enable them to excel in their profession.Students in our Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Industrial Design must first acquire fundamental skills and knowledge by taking courses in drawing, model-making, and digital media.
