Established In: 1984 Total Length: 16.45 km Total Stations: 17 Authority: KMRC (Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation) Kolkata Metro was the first metro rail to be set up in India and the fifth one to be established in the entire Asian continent.
Maintained by the Indian Railways, this underground metro network became functional in the year 1984.
Errant, reckless and rash bus drivers, showing no sign of courtesy even to the ladies as well as the elderly, made commuting from one place to the other a painfully daunting task.
It was difficult to tell whether the bus would stop at the allotted sight, whether it would reach the destination on time and whether it would stop on arrival or simply skip the waiting passengers. The third phase is complete and covers a distance of 32 km with 31 stations on the way.
The metro rail stretches from the northern Kolkata at Dum Dum and continues through Park Street and Esplanade, in the center of the city, to the southern end, in Tollygunge.
The entire length of Calcutta metro network is 16.45 km and there are a total of 17 stations on the entire stretch.Metro rail is one of the most convenient modes of traveling in a crowded city like Kolkata. The plans of Kolkata metro rail project began much later than it was conceived. The people of Delhi are happy with the service rendered by the Metro because now they have an alternate to the suffocatingly and ill-managed packed blue line buses and the inadequate service of D. People of Delhi won’t have to wait for the buses for the long time. The speed of Metro Rails is good enough to meet the needs of growing population in Delhi. It also saves the people from population of vehicles. The construction work of the Delhi Metro is on at a considerable place and it is hoped that the people of other areas in Delhi will soon be able to avail of this amazingly comfortable train service. It is foreseen by many that at the completion of this dream project, the Delhi will have a better train facility than even Japan and North Korea, the countries which have provided the present metro trains to India. The idea of Metro train in Delhi is not a new, in fact the idea was brought into consideration about some fifty years back, but the bureaucracy red—tapism made it to take a such a long period to some into reality. Metro train same like a warm sunshine on a foggy morning. However in December 26, 2002, people of Delhi got the first ride in this much awaited dream train. With the start of Metro, the burden on the roads reduced. Another outstanding feature of the netro is that it is very useful for handicapped. The Metro is on, and the people are happy with the service it is rendering. After all, now they have an alternate to the suffocating packed blue line buses and the inadequate service of the DTC – run CNG buses.
