In “Embraced by the Needle”by Gabor Mate , the author says that addiction is not by taking the drug by itself, but also from the feeling of abandonment or neglect.

Mate uses his personal experiences with people he has met who have issues with drug abuse, while he was working as a staff physician at the Portland Hotel, Downtown Eastside in Vancouver.

Mate talks about two of his patients , who were abused or sexually assaulted in their childhood years. One of the statistics that he mentions illustrates that about 8% to 15% of people become addicted by using alcohol or marijuana because of their emotional vulnerability.

Finally Mate thinks that bad life experiences like childhood abuse, sexual assault and other reasons can increase the ones’ chances of being addicted to drugs.

Mate uses scientific research to identify the essence of “high”, which is condition under the influence of drugs.
